Attire

What should family wear to graduation?

Wear Semi-Formal Attire

College graduation calls for something more formal than jeans, but not as dressy as a cocktail dress that you would wear to a wedding. Think semi-formal or business attire. Wear something similar to what you would wear to a respected workplace, church, or an important meeting.

For a woman, proper attire would be a cotton dress, a skirt and blouse, or a nice pantsuit. If the ceremony occurs at night, parents may wear darker or more formal clothing, and jackets would be suitable for either mothers or fathers.

Academic Attire  (e.g., Caps, Tassels, and Gowns):

  • Graduates are required to wear a bachelor's gown, a black cap, and the appropriate color tassel.
  • Graduates who are a member of the United States Armed Forces, are welcome to wear uniforms. Graduates who need to wear specific attire for religious or cultural purposes (e.g., hijab, etc.) are welcome to do so.
  • Your cap should be worn level, not tilted. Your gown should hang freely from the shoulders. Appropriate business clothing should be worn under your gown.
  • Academic attire can be purchased from the University Book Store in the Memorial Union during regular business hours or via their website (http://www.isubookstore.com/MerchList.aspx?ID=8392)
    • Delivery options included shipping or pick-up in store.
    • Wednesday, May 9, 2022 is the last day Bachelor's students can order via the University Book Store's website for shipping or for "Pick up at Store" option.
